Packed House for Barn Captains' Training

2/29/08 - Boston Carmen's Union Local 589 Barn Captains gathered at the Boston Teachers Union Hall for a full day of training on a variety of issues.

It was a packed house as President/Business Agent Steve MacDougall welcomed the Barn Captains and explained the day's agenda. The Union's attorney Doug Taylor of the Labor Bureau opened the program with a training seminar on writing and formatting grievances, dealing with management and responsibilities of a Barn Captain.

“Barn Captains are on the front line for the members of the Carmens Union everyday,” explained MacDougall. “Today's training is about providing them with the essential tools to be effective on behalf of the members and to improve the information flow from the members and Barn Captains to the Executive Board and Officers. The Barn Captains commitment to this training and this union make us all stronger”.

Vice President John Lee, working in coordination with Doug Taylor, provided a large binder with 10 sections detailing issues and policies that Barn Captains need to be knowledgeable about and ready to deal with.

Among the issues are drug and alcohol polices and the stricter laws that govern CDL licenses, the MBTA attendance policy, accident polices and the discipline policy. VP Lee also provided Local 589 By-Laws and By-Laws changes in the extensive binder.

The Barn Captains' Training is a day-long seminar.
